The All-Island Expressway Workers’ Union has initiated a 24-hour token strike, prompting the deployment of tri-forces and police personnel by Chief of Defence Staff, General Shavendra Silva. Despite the union’s short notice, the operations are being carried out smoothly, despite challenges such as the union taking away the ticket issuing machines and not handing over cards. The army, air force, and navy have been deployed on the Southern, Katunayake, and Central Expressways respectively. The strike was initiated due to various demands, including concerns about the privatization of the highway network.
