Andre Braugher, the acclaimed actor who won two Emmy Awards, has passed away at the age of 61 due to lung cancer. His publicist confirmed the news to the BBC. Braugher was widely recognized for his memorable performances as Captain Ray Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Detective Frank Pembleton in Homicide: Life on the Street. In 1998, he received an Emmy for his role in Homicide, and in 2006, he won another Emmy for his outstanding work in the crime thriller Thief. Braugher’s talent was also acknowledged with four Emmy nominations for his portrayal in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which ran for eight seasons. Additionally, he received Golden Globe nominations for his roles in Thief and the ABC series Gideon’s Crossing. Recently, he starred alongside Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan in the biographical drama She Said, which delves into the story of the investigative journalists who exposed Harvey Weinstein. Terry Crews, Braugher’s co-star in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, paid tribute to his remarkable talent, expressing gratitude for the privilege of knowing and working with him. Braugher’s legacy extends beyond his acting career, as he was known for living a fulfilling life. Born in Chicago, he graduated from Stanford University and pursued drama at The Juilliard School in New York. In a 2014 interview with The New York Times Magazine, Braugher revealed that he had quit drinking alcohol and smoking many years ago. He is survived by his wife, actress Ami Brabson, whom he met on the set of Homicide, and their three sons.
