The Chennai Zonal Unit of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in India has apprehended two individuals, one of whom is a Sri Lankan citizen, for their alleged involvement in an attempt to illicitly transport methamphetamine to Sri Lanka.

Law enforcement authorities successfully confiscated a total of 56 kg of the illicit substance. Reliable sources have indicated that a single kilogram of this contraband holds a value of INR 50 million in the global retail market.

The individuals who were arrested have been identified as Udhayakumar from Sri Lanka and Akbar Ali from Perambur. On December 10, the NCB summoned Udhayakumar, who was residing in Chennai, for questioning due to suspicions of his involvement in methamphetamine smuggling. Acting upon the information provided by Udhayakumar, the police seized 2 kg of the illicit drug from his possession.

Subsequently, the police were able to trace the source of the narcotics to Akbar Ali, who was then apprehended. A further 54 kg of the illicit substance was discovered at a concealed location. Initial investigations have revealed that the duo had intended to transport the drug to Sri Lanka in smaller quantities. The narcotics were obtained from Myanmar through Moreh in Manipur.

In the year 2023, the NCB seized a total of 65.061 kg of methamphetamine and 3338.018 kg of cannabis, all intended for Sri Lanka. Additionally, a total of 67 individuals were arrested in connection with these illicit activities.
