As of now, heavy rainfall in the Vavuniya district has caused 415 out of 699 tanks and reservoirs to overflow. According to District Secretary P.A. Sarathdhandra, the Pavakkulam reservoir and several other tanks and minor irrigation canals under the Agrarian Services Department and the Irrigation Department have been overflowing since yesterday morning. The overflow has affected civilian life in the district and has caused significant damage to paddy cultivation for the Maha season. Castlereigh and Wimalasurendra hydropower reservoirs have also been spilling over since yesterday morning, with Castlereigh reservoir spilling over for the first time in three years. Engineers in charge of the reservoirs have opened spill gates to release excess water, causing a flood threat in some areas. Those in low-lying areas of the reservoirs and river are advised to refrain from using Kotmale Oya and the Mahaweli Ganga due to possible dangers.
