The Ministry of Public Security has reported that a total of 1,534 individuals were apprehended during a 24-hour operation that concluded at 12.30 a.m. today (Dec 24).

Among them, investigations are currently being conducted into the assets and possessions of 23 individuals, while 99 individuals have been referred for rehabilitation, as stated by the ministry.

In light of the upcoming festive season, the police have decided to temporarily suspend the ‘Yukthiya’ operation, which was launched to combat the distribution of narcotics and organized crime throughout the country.

Consequently, the island-wide special operation will be put on hold on December 24, 25, and 26.

Addressing the matter, Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa clarified that this decision was made due to the need to assign police officers to other specific duties on Christmas Day (Dec. 25) and Poya Day (Dec. 26).
