Three individuals who previously served in the Sri Lankan military, including Captain Ranish Hewage, who held the position of commander in the First Special Forces of The International Legion of Territorial Defence of Ukraine, or the Ukrainian Foreign Legion, tragically lost their lives during a Russian military assault on Monday. The incident occurred in Bakhmut, a city in Ukraine, while Captain Hewage and his two fellow Sri Lankan former military personnel were engaged in a rescue operation. Among the Ukrainian soldiers, Captain Hewage was affectionately known as ‘Dentist’ due to his exceptional military prowess on the battlefield.

Captain Ranish Hewage retired from the Sri Lanka Army in 2018, having served as a captain in the esteemed 1st Commando Regiment. Following his departure from the military, he assumed the role of an executive officer in a private company based in Dubai. However, in March 2022, he made the decision to travel from Dubai to Ukraine and join the International Legion for the Defence of Ukraine.

Furthermore, reports have indicated that Captain Hewage was recognized for his bravery in combat and was bestowed with a promotion by the Ukrainian President. This serves as a testament to his remarkable dedication and valor in the face of adversity.
