1,676 more drug suspects nabbed during operation ‘Yukthiya’

In continuation of the island-wide operation ‘Yukthiya’ (Justice) aimed at combating the drug trade, Sri Lankan security forces have apprehended numerous additional suspects in a 24-hour mission that concluded at 12:30 a.m. on Saturday (Dec. 23).

According to the Ministry of Public Security, a total of 1,676 individuals were arrested during this time period.

Financial asset investigations have been initiated against 45 suspects, while 112 individuals have been sent for rehabilitation. Furthermore, detention orders have been obtained for 119 suspects.

The drugs seized during these extensive operations include:

• 692g of heroin
• 393g of methamphetamine (‘Ice’)
• 42.1kg of Cannabis
• 20,615 narcotic pills
• 235,680 Cannabis plants
• 534g of Hash
• 11kg of ‘Mawa’

Since the commencement of the ‘Yukthiya’ operation on December 17, the security forces have made over 11,500 arrests and confiscated significant quantities of narcotics.

Meanwhile, the Illegal Assets and Properties Investigation Division of the police has seized assets worth millions of rupees belonging to notorious criminals and drug traffickers.
