The female giraffe at the National Zoological Gardens in Dehiwala passed away on Thursday (7). However, Krishantha Christopher, the President of the Sri Lanka Podujana Zoological Garden Employees’ Union, claims that the animal was deliberately killed.

During a press conference, Krishantha Christopher emphasized that giraffes are classified as critically endangered species. He highlighted that the Dehiwala Zoo had dedicated special attention to the giraffes, evident through their conservation efforts.

According to the union leader, the giraffe’s death was not a natural occurrence but rather a result of intentional harm. This loss of such a magnificent creature is a significant setback for the Dehiwala Zoo.

“The union has repeatedly filed complaints with the ministry, urging the removal of an unqualified veterinary doctor from the Dehiwala zoo to ensure the well-being of the animals.”
