The All Island Egg Producers’ Association (AIEPA) has attributed the rise in egg prices in the local market to the accumulation and storage of eggs for the purpose of bakery and biscuit production, specifically targeting the Christmas season. Wijeya Alwis, the treasurer of AIEPA, informed the Daily Mirror that the recent heavy rainfall has resulted in a decrease in egg production, as approximately 20 percent of the chickens on each poultry farm have perished. In preparation for the holiday season, numerous large-scale and small-scale bakeries and biscuit companies have taken measures to secure their egg supplies, initiating the collection of eggs from November 15 onwards. Consequently, a significant shortage has emerged in the local market, leading to the current price of an egg being Rs. 62. The association’s treasurer emphasized that this shortage was not caused by the egg producers themselves, but rather, it is a common occurrence during festive seasons. However, once the festive season concludes, the price of eggs is expected to decrease to a maximum of approximately Rs. 40 per egg.
