According to health authorities, approximately 10 percent of males in the country have experienced domestic violence, which includes physical, sexual, and psychological abuse. Dr. Nethanjalie Mapitigama, the National Programme Manager of the Women’s Health Unit at the Family Health Bureau, emphasized that while women make up the majority of domestic violence victims, a significant portion consists of men. In light of this revelation, the Family Health Bureau has taken decisive action by introducing a 24/7 hotline as part of the “Mithuru Piyasa” initiative, aimed at combating the widespread issue of domestic violence. To report incidents related to domestic violence, the public can utilize the dedicated hotline by dialing 070 2 611 111, providing a crucial avenue for seeking help. This initiative seeks to empower individuals to come forward and create a supportive environment for those affected. Dr. Heshani Karunathilake, the medical officer-in-charge of the “Mithuru Piyasa” center at Colombo – South Teaching Hospital, highlighted the role of modern technology, such as mobile phones and social media, in exacerbating domestic violence. The launch of the “Mithuru Piyasa” hotline represents a significant step in the ongoing efforts to address domestic violence, offering a lifeline for those affected and promoting a collective response to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals, regardless of their gender.
