The All Ceylon Communication Owners’ Association (ACCOA) has stated that the implementation of the new Value Added Tax (VAT) at a rate of 18% will result in an increase in retail prices for mobile phones, accessories, and stationary items. According to ACCOA chairman Indrajith Perera, the association is unable to determine the exact prices that will be affected by the increase. This price hike will have a direct impact on small-scale mobile sellers and importers, making it difficult for consumers to purchase phones or accessories. Perera emphasized the importance of mobile phones and their accessories in today’s society, stating that they have become essential devices. He further highlighted the significance of common accessories such as chargers, back covers, displays, cables, screen protection shields, and other electronic parts in maintaining these devices. Perera argued that the imposition of VAT on mobile phones should be reconsidered, as it would have a detrimental effect on both sellers and consumers. Additionally, he mentioned that the increase in prices will also affect the affordability of stationery items, which will have consequences for the upcoming school term.
