A tragic incident unfolded on Thursday at a university in Prague, resulting in the loss of at least 14 lives and leaving over 20 individuals injured. The shooting occurred within the philosophy department building of Charles University, where the perpetrator, a student, carried out the act of violence. The shooter, whose identity remains undisclosed, also lost his life during the incident.

Initially, Prague Police Chief Martin Vondrasek reported that 15 people had died and 24 were injured. However, he later revised the numbers, stating that 14 individuals had lost their lives and 25 were injured. The reason for this adjustment was not provided, and authorities have cautioned that the death toll may still rise.

Authorities have not released any information regarding the victims or the potential motive behind the shooting. Czech Interior Minister Vit Rakusan has stated that investigators do not suspect any connection to extremist ideologies or groups.

According to Vondrasek, the police believe that the gunman had also killed his father earlier that day in his hometown of Hostoun, located just west of Prague. Additionally, evidence found during a search of the shooter’s residence suggests his involvement in the murder of another man and his 2-month-old daughter on December 15 in Prague. However, further details regarding these incidents have not been provided.

The police chief described the shooter as an exemplary student with no prior criminal record, refraining from disclosing any additional information. The gunman sustained severe injuries, but it remains unclear whether he died by suicide or was killed during an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement. Vondrasek emphasized that there is no evidence to suggest the presence of an accomplice.

It has been revealed that the shooter possessed multiple firearms, as he was heavily armed during the attack and carried a significant amount of ammunition. Vondrasek characterized the act as a meticulously planned and horrific act of violence.

In response to this tragic event, university authorities have announced immediate security enhancements within their premises. We deeply mourn the loss of members from our university community and extend our heartfelt condolences to their loved ones.
