Yesterday, the Alcohol and Drug Information Centre (ADIC) expressed their concerns regarding the government’s announcement of flexible opening hours for bars and liquor stores. According to ADIC Executive Director Sampath De Seram, this decision will lead to an increase in alcohol consumption and have negative implications for both the health and economy of the country. De Seram emphasized that regardless of its legality, alcohol is harmful in every aspect, and steps should be taken to reduce overall consumption. ADIC Sri Lanka has been actively working towards reducing the demand for alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs for over three decades, providing accurate information about the consequences associated with their consumption. Data from the World Health Organization and the Ministry of Health reveal that a significant number of deaths in Sri Lanka are preventable, with tobacco and alcohol use being major risk factors. Alcohol also poses a substantial economic burden on the country, with the excise revenue from alcohol tax in 2022 amounting to Rs.165.2 billion. However, a study conducted by the United Nations Development Programme highlighted that the health and economic losses caused by alcohol use amounted to Rs.237 billion. Additionally, the citizens of Sri Lanka spend Rs.590 million per day on beer and arrack, and Rs.380 million per day on cigarettes, further contributing to the economic burden.
