Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) Commissioner Bhadrani Jayawardena has disclosed that a total of 558 trees, which are over a century old, have been identified as hazardous in Colombo city. Initially, only 330 trees were recognized as dangerous based on information received from different sources. However, upon further inspection, the Commissioner revealed that 558 trees were found to be hazardous, out of which 214 have already been removed with the assistance of the CMC.
Colombo stands out in terms of its abundant tree population, with some trees exceeding 100 years in age. In order to preserve these trees, the CMC is making significant efforts to maintain a balance by trimming branches.
In addition to the identified hazardous trees, there is also a risk of other trees in Colombo City falling. The issue of falling trees in Colombo gained attention once again when a large tree near Gregory’s Road in Cinnamon Garden collapsed onto the road. This incident adds to the previous instances of trees falling across various roads in Colombo, as highlighted by Commissioner Jayawardena.
