Commissioner of Prisons and Media Spokesman Gamini B. Dissanayake has confirmed that the situation at Matara Prison has returned to normal after several inmates fell ill. In response to the incident, the prison department implemented strict health measures to ensure the safety of the inmates. Unfortunately, one inmate was reported dead due to suspected brain fever. However, there have been no new cases of inmates displaying similar symptoms in the past 48 hours. Currently, two out of the sixteen hospitalized inmates are still receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while the others are being treated in a regular ward. Mr. Dissanayake emphasized that the prison officials remain vigilant in monitoring the health condition of the inmates.
